A GoFundMe has been established by his father, Jamar Byrd, Sr., to support the family in the wake of his death.
"His life was taken far too soon," Byrd wrote. "I watched helplessly as he fought for his life, and our family is devastated by this unimaginable loss. The pain and trauma of that night have left us struggling to cope, and we are doing our best to support each other through this difficult time."
At 3:05 p.m., Bridgeton police responded to Ivy Square Apartments on Cottage Avenue and found Byrd, the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office said. He was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
Kavon Underwood-Palmer, a 19-year-old Bridgeton has been arrested and charged with first degree murder, Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said. Unferwood-Palmer also faces assault charges, authorities said.
A physical altercation took place in a parking lot prior to Byrd being stabbed once, authorities said.
The 17-year-old was the oldest of Byrd's seven children.
"This pain I have will never go away," Byrd said. "He was caring, loving and respectful, I will be missing him everyday."
