Jackson McClain Chaney, 25, is behind bars following a tense standoff with members of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office after allegedly threatening the woman with the gun, officials said.
First responders were initially called around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, to a home in the 45000 block of Hickory Hills Circle in California to investigate a reported verbal altercation that escalated.
Upon arrival, a woman advised deputies that during the argument, Chaney pulled out an assault rifle and threatened her by pointing it at her before she was able to flee unharmed.
Undeterred, Chaney continued to refuse to exit the residence while deputies established a barricade. Members of the Emergency Services Team, Hostage Negotiations Team, and Criminal Investigations Division responded to assist.
After several hours, warrants were obtained for the home, and Chaney was taken into custody and transported to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment.
Officials noted that a Pistol Mitraliera Model 1963 assault rifle was recovered at the scene.
Once released from the medical facility, the sheriff's office said that Chaney was taken to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, where he was charged with first- and second-degree assault.
He remains behind bars pending an upcoming bond hearing.
