NORWALK, Conn. Jack P. DeWitt, a longtime Norwalk resident, died June 18 at Norwalk Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was 84.
Born April 30, 1928, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of Reinhold and Katie DeWitt. Raised primarily in Watertown, Conn., DeWitt attended The Taft School. He went on to graduate from MIT in 1950.
DeWitt then served as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1951 to 1953. Stationed in the European Command, he received the Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
After his service, DeWitt worked in various engineer positions throughout Connecticut. He retired from Bridgeport Metal Goods in 1993 as plant quality control manager. Dewitt was also a premiere breeder of terriers in Connecticut.
At the time of his death, DeWitt was president of the Housatonic Cairn Terrier Club. He also acted as the Ox Ridge Kennel Club delegate to the American Kennel Club at regular meetings.
During his retirement, he pursues his passion in photography. He has served as treasurer of the Norwalk Camera Club and was named Photographer of the Year in 2004. He volunteered with Connecticut Challenge and the Whittingham Cancer Walk.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Susan; a daughter, Jennifer DeWitt, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Jeff (Kim) DeWitt, of Phoenix; a sister, Mary Smith, of Portland, Ore.; and a granddaughter. He was predeceased by his first wife, Janice, in 1979.
A memorial service will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Magner Funeral Home in Norwalk. Burial will be private.
