BEDFORD, N.Y.-- Summer is getting closer. One sign? Bedford pools open for the pre-season at noon Saturday.
Superintendent of Recreation and Parks Bill Heidepriem said Bedford will celebrate the start of the season with Hurricane Irene Parties at each of the town's three pools. He said the hurricane was a difficult ending to last summer, which shut down Bedford Village, Bedford Hills and Katonah pools for extended periods of time last August due to power outages and storm damage.
"One of our three pools (Bedford Village) didn't even open for the rest of the summer, so we felt that it would be a nice way to close out last summer and kick off this summer," he said.
Each pool party will feature games and prizes, a discounted food menu and guest fees and a DJ at each of the pools, he said. They will be June 1 at Bedford Hills Memorial Park Pool, 60 Haines Road in Bedford Hills, June 2 at Katonah Memorial Park Pool, 38 High Street in Katonah and June 9 at Bedford Village Memorial Park Pool, Greenwich Road in Bedford.
Aside from basic amenities, like tables, chairs and umbrellas, snack bars, diving boards, lap lanes and water basketball, said Heidepriem, each hamlet pool has its own competitive swimming and diving team for children ages 6-18 that competes in the Northern Westchester Swim Conference. Team registration ends June 15.
Residents are required to buy a pass for use of the town pools, but there are several different options to choose from, including the family membership, which costs $330. A season pass for youth costs $62, for adults costs $162 and for seniors costs $43.
There also is a daily guest fee, which is $8 for adults and $5 for children and seniors
The pools will be open this Memorial Day weekend from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.
As the pre-season continues, the pools will be open from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekends.
The pools open for regular weekday hours of 1-8 p.m. starting June 18. They will open for regular weekend hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. starting June 23. The full schedule can be found on the town's website.
