Malik Simpson, 29, was an active-duty firefighter in Irvington and is being remembered for his service and dedication, according to a GoFundMe organized by the department, which had raised more than $6,000 as of press time.
Simpson was “more than a firefighter—he was a father, brother, a friend, and a protector,” the campaign says.
“He answered every call with courage, selflessness, and pride, always putting others before himself,” the fundraiser reads.
The fundraiser was created to help support his family with funeral expenses and ongoing needs following his death, organizers said.
State Sen. Renee C. Burgess also shared a tribute following Simpson’s death.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Active Duty Irvington Firefighter Malik Simpson of FMBA Local 14,” Burgess said. “Firefighter Simpson served with courage and dedication, and his loss is felt across the Irvington community and beyond.”
Viewing services will be held Sunday, March 29 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Cotton Funeral Service on Bergen Street in Newark, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., according to arrangements.
