Irene Doesn't Stop Norwalk College's Opening

NORWALK, Conn. – Hurricane Irene may have wreaked havoc on the schedules of most local public school systems but Norwalk Community College opened as planned for its fall semester Wednesday.

"Everyone was here, faculty and students," said college spokesman Madeline Barillo. "We won't have the total enrollment figure for about a week, but it looks good."

Highlighting the first day was the opening of the college's Center for Health and Wellness. "There's still some finish work to be done, but it's up and running and it's gorgeous," said Barillo.

Traffic on Richards Avenue was heavy, especially between classes, but could have been worse. "Wednesdays are generally a little lighter," said Barillo. Thursday it was heavier, with traffic backed up several hundred yards on either side of the campus on Richards. Cars were parked on the grass surrounding the parking lots.
