Iona's Sean Armand Breaks School Three-Point Record

Iona Gaels sophomore Sean Armand came off the bench Tuesday and hit a school and MAAC record 10 three-pointers to lead Iona in a 95-59 rout of Siena at Madison Square Garden.

Armand was 10-for-19 from beyond the arc and 11-for-22 overall. The 10 threes broke teammate Kyle Smyth’s school record, which he set last year at Albany with eight treys. The previous Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record was nine.

“It feels good,” Armand said of breaking the record. “I kept going and it starts in practice. It went from this morning to the game. I did extra shooting before shoot around. It felt good to do it at Madison Square Garden. I was happy about it because my friends and family were here. There is no better place.”

Iona was down 19-17 early in the first half but scored 10 unanswered points to take a 27-19 lead. Armand’s aerial assault began with 6:04 remaining in the first half and Iona ahead, 37-25.

The sophomore scored the Gaels’ final 20 points of the half and outscored the entire Siena team by himself by a margin of 20-6. He then scored nine of Iona’s first 13 points of the second half.

His three pointer with 13:24 remaining in the second broke Smyth’s school record. His final trey at the 10:30 mark broke the conference record.

Senior guard Jermel Jenkins added 16 points of his own off the bench, while junior guard Lamont Jones had 14 points, seven assists and two steals. Senior forward Mike Glover had 10 points.

Senior guard Scott Machado nearly recorded his second triple-double in three games as he finished with nine points, assists and rebounds.

In total, Iona’s 17 three-pointers was one less than the school record set last season at Albany.

Siena’s freshman stud Evan Hymes led the team with 22 points and added five assists. Junior OD Anosike recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while senior Brandon Walters had 10 rebounds and four blocks.

The win ended Iona’s school-record nine game road trip away from the Hynes Center at 7-2. They will play at home for the first time in 39 days when they host Niagara on Friday at 9 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
