NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. New Rochelles Iona College Go New Ro learning program has wrapped up for another year.
Incoming freshman Nicholas DiCarlo of Bronx, N.Y. found the experience gratifying.
Its moving to me that we are reaching out and seeing the happy faces of the people we help, he said.
Sixteen incoming freshmen finished the program Friday. The program helped students involve themselves in community service, learn about the concept and responsibilities of citizenship, and explore how they can be leaders.
Incoming freshman Marie Kalb flew in from San Francisco, Calif. to participate in the program before the fall semester starts.
Its definitely been a highly rewarding experience and one I would recommend to next years incoming freshmen class, she said.
The three-day program also gave the students the opportunity to get to know the New Rochelle and Iona College community. Some students visited brothers at St. Josephs Care Facility, while others visited New Rochelles United Hebrew Geriatric Center.
Others helped teach English at Ursuline Outreachs Adult Learning Center, and the Communities for All Ages Lincoln Avenue Community Garden. Students also worked with New Rochelle Parks and Recreation Commissioner William Zimmermann to paint rusted railings at Hudson Park.
All participants brought two cereal boxes for New Rochelles HOPE Community Services.
