The Westport/Weston Interfaith Council is gearing up for its food-donation drive on June 6, Environmental Day. Council head Pastor Ed Horne from the United Methodist Church and private chef Tor Sporré met on the steps of the Saugatuck Congregational Church to promote the event. It will take place at the Saugatuck Congregational Church Farmers Market, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The market sets up in the parking lot behind the worship hall every Sunday from May 30 through mid-November. The council, made up of people from various religious groups, will collect food for families in need. Visitors on Environmental Day should bring donations of non-perishables. In exchange for their generosity they will receive a booklet of meditations.
At closing each week, the merchants send their unsold produce to the Park City Initiative in Bridgeport. The organization is one of several food pantries in the city helping to fight hunger.
Environmental Day will feature a Green Art Exhibit by children and local artists. The displays will range from sculptures to crayon drawings, each honoring the Earth in the creators own way.
The Interfaith Council also wants to encourage healthy eating. Sporré started Ask a Chef at the farmers market and teaches healthier cooking practices. He will bring his own mix of whole barley, millet and quinoa that he said provides all of the amino acids found in meats. Council member and nutritionist Geri Zatcoff will also offer visitors advice on food. Other council members hosting the donation drive include Angela Belta, Mary Ann West, Cece Saunders, Dolores Bacharach and Rebecca Heyward.
