Westchester County’s health department will kick off its Safe to Sleep campaign Tuesday in Yonkers as nurses demonstrate safe and unsafe sleeping environments for infants.

And officials say the show-and-tell may be surprising.  Many adults were put to sleep in unsafe conditions when they were younger, they said.

As part of the morning session, moms will learn how to correct the potentially dangerous sleeping environment and create safer conditions for their children.

“What better Mother’s Day gift can any mom receive than a simple way to keep her baby safe?” said county Health Commissioner and nurse Sherlita Amler.

The informational session, led by Amler, will begin at 10 a.m. at the Yonkers WIC Clinic, 20 South Broadway. Similar campaigns will continue in the upcoming days at WIC clinics and community events throughout the county.

The demonstrations also coincide with the observance of National Nurses Week, which runs from May 6 to 12. Health department officials said the Safe to Sleep campaign is just another example of the work public health nurses do on a daily basis, informing individuals to increase their chances of living a healthy lifestyle.

“Teaching mothers how to keep their babies safe is an extension of the education and work the nurses do every day to protect the public health,” Amler said.
