FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfields voters will have even more options when they head to the polls this November. The Independent party has filed its candidates for the fall local elections. Firefighter Hugh Dolan will lead the slate as the partys candidate for first selectman, the towns top elected post.
The Independent party has assembled an excellent team of non-politicians, of homeowners, citizens, and taxpayers who will lead Fairfield through the challenging times which lie ahead, Dolan said in a statement. [We are] committed to bringing to Fairfield woefully lacking financial controls, business discipline, common sense and open administration providing fair dealing to residents, employees, taxpayers and all other stakeholders.
Dolan entered the race over the July 4 weekend. He originally sought the Republican nomination but finished third in the partys caucus with 68 votes, accounting for just 7.2 percent of the total votes cast that day. But Dolan and nine other candidates gathered enough signatures on their nomination petitions to get on the Nov. 8 ballot. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill confirmed their candidacies last week.
Deanna Polizzo, a Reid Street resident and commercial real estate executive, will join Dolan as his running mate for the Board of Selectmen. Together they will run against Democrats Michael Tetreau and Cristin McCarthy Vahey and Republicans Robert Bellitto Jr. and James Walsh for majority control of the three-member executive board.
The Independents will also run two candidates for the Board of Education. Amanda Parks challenged state Rep. Kim Fawcett for her seat in 2008 as a Fairfield University junior. Joining her in the school board race is Hugh Donnelly, a local attorney. The two will vie for the five open spots on the board.
Laura Incerto is the Independent nominee for the Board of Finance, which monitors all of the town's spending and taxation. Incerto, along with neighbors from the Pine Creek area, challenged the town this summer over property tax issues. She was one of the vocal protestors who picketed Town Hall in response to what they felt were unfair assessments to their properties in last falls revaluation.
The Independents also have five candidates for the Representative Town Meeting, Fairfields legislature. The largest showing is in District 2, where Frank Rizzetta, William Hanford and Anthony Kicska will all try for seats. John Panigutti from District 4 and Wyatt Whiteman from District 6 will also run as Independents. They will face full slates of both Democrats and Republicans, and the top five vote-getters in each of Fairfields 10 districts will earn two-year terms on the lawmaking body.
