More ice is on the way for Darien from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued ice storm and freezing rain warnings for southern Fairfield County, effective until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Darien is expected to receive freezing drizzle and sleet Tuesday night, with the freezing rain picking up after midnight. The freezing rain will continue steadily into Wednesday afternoon, tapering off before the evening. Between a quarter-inch and a half-inch of ice is expected to accumulate, making travel difficult.
The Darien Police issued a warning to residents, asking them to allow extra time and distance when driving, as snow and ice have made the roads slippery and restricted sight lines. The advisory also said, "Check on neighbors who may need assistance; we all need to 'weather the storm' together."
The storm Tuesday morning led to early dismissal of Darien schools, as well as the closure of a number of businesses in town. The public hearing for the Darien Board of Education's 2011-12 budget has been rescheduled to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Darien High School auditorium. The Planning and Zoning Commission's meeting has been canceled. The Feb. 8 meeting will follow Tuesday's agenda. The Darien Library closed its doors at 5 p.m.
