Updated 2/2/11 1:30 p.m.: As of 1:30 p.m., only two Westport homes were without power, according to CL&P.
Original story: The ice storm Wednesday morning has caused numerous power outages and a small fire in Connecticut Light & Power's substation in Greens Farms, according to Westport Fire Chief Chris Ackley. Residents got the news via a Code Red call just before 9:30 a.m. They were advised that the fire required CL&P to turn off power to nearby homes to repair the damage from the fire. The call indicated a two- to three-hour window was needed to complete the repair work.
Ackley also advised residents to limit their driving. "Residents are reminded to use extreme caution while driving and do not go out unless absolutely necessary," he said in a statement. "Please stay away from downed power lines. Westport Public Works, Police and Fire are extremely busy coping with this event so please be patient and call 911 only for emergencies."
Additionally, Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff has ordered partial activation of the Emergency Operations Center at Fire Headquarters.
As of 10:30 a.m., 131 Westport homes were without power, CL&P reported. The Westport Center for Senior Activities is open as a warming center. The library, often a place of sanctuary for many, will be open at noon.
