U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Newark took Alvaro Tuero, a Cuban national, into custody upon his release from a state prison in Bridgeton, according to ICE. Records show he was released on March 6.
Tuero, of Union City, has prior convictions including sexually assaulting a child under 13, lewdness, endangering the welfare of a child through sexual conduct, burglary, and parole violations, authorities said.
New Jersey Department of Corrections records show Tuero was most recently sentenced on Oct. 25, 2024 in Hudson County for endangering the welfare of a child through sexual acts and for violating a condition of a special sentence tied to that offense.
The records show the child endangerment offense occurred on Feb. 17, 2023, and resulted in a three-year sentence, while the violation offense from March 10, 2023 carried a maximum term of 365 days.
In 2018, he was arrested for violating his supervision under his Meghan's Law terms, the Jersey Journal reported at the time.
ICE described Tuero as a “serial criminal” and said the arrest was carried out immediately following his release from custody.
