Hurricane Katia Projected to Spare Harrison

HARRISON, N.Y. - Hurricane Katia has been classified as a Category 3 hurricane by the National Weather Service but isn't expected to come ashore. However, the winds still have potential to create rough waves and affect certain parts of the eastern coast.

The storm's projected path will not hit the metropolitan area in the same way last week's Tropical Storm Irene had, so residents in Harrison should not expect similar effects. Though Katia has weakened in the recent days, it is still creating winds up to 120 miles per hour as of Tuesday morning.

A chance of showers and mild winds will remain in Harrison throughout the week until Friday, when the rain should be give way to a partly cloudy day with a high of 79 degrees.

Harrison Mayor and Supervisor Joan Walsh said in a statement last week that residents should register with the town's emergency notification services to remain informed through similar events such as Irene.
