Angelo Koelpin died this week, according to his family and his employer, Walden-based Mesco Building Supply.

In the days since his death, Koelpin's sister, Theresa Vosburgh, started a GoFundMe on Tuesday, Aug. 18, to help his family cover cremation expenses and provide support for his young daughter, Eliana.

"Those of you who knew Angelo knew he was a hard worker, protective, and a loyal friend," Vosburgh wrote, adding, "He was a good father, uncle, and the best brother I could have ever had growing up."

Vosburgh said her brother had struggled with depression on and off over the past several years and had been deeply affected by the death of their father from cancer nearly five years ago.

More recently, Koelpin and his fiancée, Ashley, welcomed their daughter, Eliana, about a year and a half ago. Vosburgh said any money remaining after funeral expenses will be placed into an account to help support Eliana.

Koelpin's coworkers at Mesco Building Supply in Walden also paid tribute to him, remembering him as a valued member of their team.

"He was a genuinely good person who will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him," the company said.

His death is also being mourned within the region's fishing community. Connecticut-based Pelagic Beast Fishing Charters described Koelpin as an avid fisherman and “true outdoorsman” who was known by many who fished aboard the Klondike IX.

"Angelo was the guy who would give you the shirt off his back without a second thought. He was always willing to lend a hand, help a friend, or be there when someone needed him," the charter company wrote on social media, adding, "There really are no words for a loss like this."

The group said the loss was particularly heartbreaking for Koelpin's young daughter and called on members of the fishing community to rally around his family.

As of Wednesday, Aug. 19, the GoFundMe page started by Vosburgh has collected $7,390 out of a $10,000 goal. Those who wish to donate can do so by clicking here.
