CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. One of Horace Greeleys team goals going into the 2011-12 high school wrestling season was to increase the number of sectional qualifiers.
Last year, the Quakers had three wrestlers compete in the Section 1 Large School Wrestling Championships/New York State Qualifier. They were hoping to at least double that number.
The Quakers achieved this goal Saturday as eight wrestlers advanced to the 2012 Section 1 Large School Wrestling Championships/New York State Qualifier that will be held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11-12.
The first day of wrestling will be held at Clarkstown South High School, beginning 9 a.m. Wrestling will resume with the semifinals Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Goldstein Center on the campus of Pace University in Pleasantville. The finals are scheduled for 4 p.m.
The first four wrestlers in each weight class moved on.
Brent Lobien was Greeleys lone champion, winning the 285-pound title with a 12-4 major decision over North Rocklands Connor Reigotti.
We are very happy and it definitely shows progress, especially with only one senior in the group, Horace Greeley coach Mike DeBellis said.
Scott Wymbs (195), Jon Russo (126) and Kirby Atlas (113) qualified for the second consecutive year. Wymbs and Russo were both finalists.
Wymbs suffered an injury in the semifinals, requiring stitches, against North Rocklands Ekpenede Imasuen. DeBellis did not allow Wymbs to wrestle in the final. Russo dropped an 8-2 decision to North Rocklands Matt Caputo.
Lobien dominated his opponent in the finals and I felt Jon wrestled a good, tough match against Caputo, DeBellis said.
