Lou Argenio walked away with a trophy from the Stamford Amateur Golf Championship last year. He'd be the first to tell you it was about time.
The Stamford Old Timers honored Argenio at their annual golf outing Monday at E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course. Proceeds from the event support scholarship programs and youth sports organizations.
Argenio, 59, knocked on the door numerous times in the championship flight of the tournament, but each time walked away without hardware. He consistently finished among the top 10 every year between 1990 and 2000. Three times in a five-year span, he led heading into the final hole. "And managed to lose in spectacular fashion,'' Argenio said. "I never could quite turn the corner until I got older."
When he reflects, Argenio laughs about the ones that got away. "In some ways it's almost better,'' he said. "People come up to me all the time and say 'Aren't you the guy who four-putted on the last hole?' If I had won they probably would have forgotten who I am."
Argenio grew up in Stamford, moved away for about 20 years, and returned in 1990. He plays frequently and works as a ranger at Sterling Farms Golf Course. He has had his share of golf success, including winning the men's club title at Brennan. He enjoyed the recognition of the Old Timers, for whom his father served as president in 1991. His partner for yesterday's outing was Joe Marrucco, a friend of his father's. "It took a long time to get honored, but I finally made it,'' Lou said.
