Homework Program Assists New Rochelle Students

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Trinity Elementary School students Citlali Fragoso and Itzel Fragoso utilized the Steps to Success program at the New Rochelle Public Library Wednesday afternoon.

“It helps me with math problems, reading and my word study,” Itzel said.

College and high school students and volunteers assist elementary and middle school students in organizing homework needs, locating necessary resources, along with strengthening reading skills every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tutors are also available Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to the program's informational brochure.

Citlali said she often comes to receive help with multiplication and division math problems and has been able to learn more efficiently because of the extra assistance.

“They tell me how to do a problem,” Citlali said. “If I need help with a problem, they teach me how to do it an easier way.”

The students’ father Pedro Fragoso also finds great use from the program.

“Sometimes I don’t understand the mathematics or the history,” Fragoso said. “They help a lot,” he added. “Sometimes if I don’t understand something they help understand.”

The Steps to Success Program is a free service dedicated to providing volunteer homework and tutorial services in conjunction with the Youth Bureau of the City of New Rochelle, Monroe College and Westchester Library System.

Librarians at the New Rochelle Public Library are also available to help students locate additional information.

"We help them find reference materials that they need to find," said Kathleen Cronin, head of children’s services at the New Rochelle Public Library.  This is an addition to the duties they serve daily at the library, she said.
