Helena Cullen, 89, Former Norwalk Operator

NORWALK, Conn. — Helena Kallaway Cullen, 89, of Norwalk, died April 7 at St. Joseph’s Manor in Trumbull. 

She was born in Stamford on Jan. 31, 1923, the daughter of the late Samuel and Etta Bushey Kallaway. Married to the late Raymond Charles Cullen for 63 years, she lived in Norwalk for most of her life. 

Cullen graduated from Stamford High School in 1940 and worked for several years as a switchboard operator for local answering services. She was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and served in several state positions. 

A longtime member of St. Mary Church in Norwalk, Cullen enjoyed drawing, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren and dogs.  

She is survived by four sons, Richard (Sharon Rosa) Cullen, of Jupiter, Fla., Brian (Sharon Powell) Cullen, of Torrington, David (Joan Esposito) Cullen, of Fairfield, and Shawn (John Kee) Cullen, of New Hope, Pa.; a sister, Marcia Calomino, of Stamford; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Lucille Burke, and two brothers, Edward and William Kallaway. 

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Magner Funeral Home in Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Pius X Church in Fairfield. Family and friends will meet at the church, and burial will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford.
