She was born April 1, 1946, in Brooklyn and was raised in Poughkeepsie.
The daughter of the late Ruth and Irving Cooperman, she was a 1967 graduate of Emerson College, where she studied English literature and theater and worked toward her masters in film. For many years, she enjoyed a career as an editor in and out of New York City, including at Matthew Bender, Franklin Mint and Readers Digest, as well as freelance editing. She also was employed at the Mid-Hudson Library. She considered her greatest and most satisfying work the raising of her family and her three grandchildren.
She was a lifelong animal lover and loved to share ideas with friends and family on many subjects, such as politics, culture, the arts, film and her passion for Buffalo Bills football.
She was married to David Kimmel for 25 years and raised two sons, Steven and Paul Kalnitzky, who survive her. Steven and his wife, Kimberly, live in Edmond, Okla. and Paul and his wife, Virginia, live in Poughkeepsie. She also is survived by two stepchildren, Peter Kimmel and his spouse, Joel Iott, of Chicago, and Phyllis Kimmel of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Brody, Lily and Isabelle; two sisters, Maxine Smith and her husband, John Economos, of Cape Cod, Mass., and Susan Sanderson and her husband, Rob, of Hyde Park; a niece, Star Sanderson, of New York City; and a nephew, Bryan Economos of Kingston. She also will be greatly missed by a number of very dear friends from her Emerson days and friendships that lasted more than 50 years.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Sunday at the William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary.
