Hackensack Riverkeeper Seeks Help Fighting Meadowlands Construction

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Hackensack Riverkeeper says has it has taken more than 11 years, but the worst has finally happened -- a developer wants New Jersey to gut the historic 2004 Meadowlands Master Plan and rezone protected wetlands to allow for commercial construction.

The Hackensack Riverkeeper is asking the public to help fight construction on wetlands that protect the river.

According to a statement from the Riverkeeper, the North Bergen Motel Association has petitioned the state Sports & Exposition Authority to rezone part of the Meadowlands, endangering at least 2.1 acres of wetlands. Riverkeeper is asking residents to write to the NJSEA in protest.

The 2004 master plan prohibits the destruction of protected wetlands for commercial purposes. The plan was adopted unanimously by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and approved by the state Legislature by the same margin. Allowing just one property owner to circumvent the 2004 master plan would invite others to try to do the same, the statement said.

The statement went on to say that if the zoning is allowed, it would set a precedent and leave up to 500 additional protected wetlands acres in the cross hairs.

To help or take part in the Riverkeeper effort, write to NJSEA by Jan. 1.
