Accompanied by an inflatable rat, the carpenters protested against Arrendondo & Co., the company constructing a Westy Self-Storage building, expected to be completed this summer, Council Representative Mike Pierce told Daily Voice.
"There are workers in there not being paid area standards... wages, benefits, retirement plans," said Pierce, who has been working on the project. "There is a portion of the project where carpenters aren't being utilized."
The company's director of development, Edward Arrendondo, said he cannot comment on the situation but is happy with the work that the unions have been doing for Arrendondo & Co.
"The vast majority of this job we have used union labor," he said. "They've done excellent work. I hope [the situation] gets resolved soon."
The union workers plan on picketing for "as long as we need to be here," Pierce said.
