Greenburgh Acquires County Land for Open Space

GREENBURGH, N.Y. - The Greenburgh Town Board has approved the acquisition of property on Old Sprain Road that it had been interested in for years to preserve as open space.

The 45,877-square-foot parcel was sold to Greenburgh by Westchester County for the nominal fee of $1. The town wanted to secure the land for historical and recreation purposes, as well as for the planning and development of nature-like trailyway between McDowell Park and Old Sprain Road.

"We have been discussing this acquisition for many years with the county. This is surplus county land," said Supervisor Paul Feiner, who credited Town Historian Frank Jazzo for leading the effort to acquire the property.

Part of the holdup in finalizing the transaction was determining the boundaries of the property, which straddles Greenburgh and the village of Ardsley. Ardsley also obtained its slice of the land for $1. Another portion is being sold to an adjacent homeowner.
