If you play golf at Longshore Golf Course in Westport, chances are pretty good youve seen Jim Brockwell. The 73-year-old town resident works four days a week as a starter. Hes frequently there three other days playing with his regular foursome. I do, Brockwell says, spend a lot of time here.
Brockwell has worked at the course for four years. A former salesman for Ampacet in Tarrytown, N.Y., he retired in 2002 after a 30-plus year career with the company. He said he misses the everyday corporate environment, but enjoys his job at Longshore.
I like the people contact, Brockwell says. You meet a lot of people in this job. I have three sons that went through the school system here, and I see a lot of those same people that I met while my sons were growing up.
His son Mark owns MJB Realty in Westport. His other sons, Curt and Greg, have re-located to the Boston area. He has 11 grandchildren, and watching their activities can sometimes create conflicts with his job at Longshore. If I dont have two or three days lead time, I might not make it to their games, Brockwell says.
Besides his role as the starter, Brockwell enjoys his outings with partners Tom McGee, Jeff Strauss and Fred Hunter. Theyve been a regular foursome for about 10 years and usually play at Longshore, but sometimes switch to other area public facilities. I asked him if theyre competitive. Oh yeah, Brockwell says without hesitation. You throw $10 in the pot, and you hope you get it back.
