The situation was scary for one White Oak Shade Road family this morning, but luckily the New Canaan Fire Department, Police Department and Emergency Medical Services acted quickly. At about 6:30, a nine-year-old girl found herself stuck in the familys chimney. It took about 20 to 25 minutes for emergency responders to disassemble the flue and set the girl free, and thankfully she was not injured.
The home is currently being painted, and the girl used a ladder leaning against the house to climb to the roof. From there, she dropped about two stories, feet-first, before being stopped just above the fireplace. Her parents recognized that she was in trouble almost immediately and called for help.
Once emergency crews arrived, they attempted several times to open the flue without hurting the girl. But eventually, responders managed to help her escape on her own. She was able to contort herself to get out of the chimney, into the fireplace and out into the house, Assistant Chief Jack Hennessey said. Kind of like a Santa Claus maneuver.
The girl luckily was not harmed in the ordeal. It was a happy ending. It could have been a tragedy, but it turned out to be a very happy ending, Hennessey told reporters.
