Get Local for Lunch, Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Farmers Market and the Westport Arts Center  are teaming up to make your lunch hours more nourishing, in a mind/body sort of way. Together, they will kick off Lunch-escapes on Wednesday, June 27. Lunch-escapes is an interactive lunch series taking place on alternate Wednesdays on the WAC deck, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Du Soleil Fine Foods, a Ridgefield-based purveyor of things delicious, fresh and local, will offer fresh produce and other yummies. And area experts in gardening, food and other aesthetic pursuits will lead discussions around the ideas of community and landscape.

The summer menu is packed with personalities. Here’s who’s on tap:

June 27 - Sal Gilbertie from Gilbertie’s Herb Gardens will discuss organic herb farming, planting and the intricacies of running a 90 year-old local business.

July 11 – Floral design guru Erin Ostreicher explains how to utilize locally grown flowers to create professional looking arrangements.

July 25 - Patti Popp from Easton’s Sport Hill Farm looks at organic farming in Fairfield County, with special focus on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and what they mean to our food supply.

August 8 – Resident rock star baking guru John Barricelli of SoNo Baking Company serves up a lunchtime chat about baking and cookbooks. And he may just bring some sweet samples to tempt you.

August 22 – This date offers a double whammy for local advocates. First up, Dottie Carpenter from Doc’s Maple Syrup will discuss maple farming and provide plenty of tasty samples. Next, Westport Farmers Market Director Lori Cochran-Dougall will close the series by highlighting what’s fun and beneficial about “living local” and supporting area vendors.
