"He was a great family man and friend and dedicated to the town of Paramus where he lived and worked," Mayor Richard LaBarbiera said.
Benson, 50, joined the police department in 1982, was an active firefighter more than 30 years and volunteered as a communications officer for the borough's Office of Emergency Management.
He leaves a wife of 26 years, Corinne Benson (nee Niland) and three children: Sean Benson, Jr., Erin Benson and Cory Benson.
Visiting hours are today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 113 South Farview Avenue in Paramus.
