Fundraiser Will Aid Dance Project

When Debbie Arrieta learned about Maureen Pavia's Dancing Classrooms project, she wanted to do something to. She also saw it as a great opportunity for Stamford's Latino community.

"She works with the Boys & Girls Club," said Arrieta. "Many of the kids are Latino. We want to start helping those kids who need all the help." The first lady's project, which launches early next year, aims to bring the joy of dance to area young people.

Arrieta organized a fund-raiser Sunday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ladi's Beauty Salon, 805 E. Main St. Twenty-five percent of profits from services rendered and products sold – including unisex styling, jewelry and Mary Kay items – will be donated to the Stamford Gives Back Association. Pavia is planning the Connecticut launch of Dancing Classrooms, which she's implementing through SGBA.

Pavia will be on hand to greet visitors at Ladi's Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

"We're also going to have raffles, so we are getting together and putting things together," said Arrieta.

The salon's proprietor is Ladi Rojas.

"As Latinas," said Arrieta, "we want to recognize the efforts that our new mayor and our first lady are trying to get in touch with the Latino community [and] we want to help our great city."

Pavia is looking to establish Dancing Classrooms at the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford and at Waterside School in January 2011.
