Fireworks bursting in air brought home to one Weston family Sunday thoughts not only of those who have fought--but those who will--for our freedom.
"[Independence Day] means a lot to me," said John Burke, "because my oldest son is in the Marines now, so he's going to be going over to Afghanistan." Burke talked as he sat waiting for the fireworks to begin with his wife, Janie, and son Trevor. Earlier in the day, the family barbecued burgers together.
Westonites began gathering on the green between the middle school and high school at 4:30, hefting blankets, lawn chairs and picnic eats. The Georgetown Saloon fed the crowd, and local bands entertained them throughout the evening. Children collected glow sticks and played in the dirt of the baseball field while waiting for the show.
The Garcia family just arrived in Wilton from Florida Sunday and came to the celebration with daughter Mila and a family from Weston. "It's her first 4th of July and it's here in our new home," said Maria Garcia.
For Max and Jennifer Mitchell, Independence Day is a time to remember our country's history. "We fought for our freedom, and this country was born and has become a beacon for the world in terms of freedom democracy and hope," he said.
