Four Common Council, One Legislator Seat Contested in Peekskill

PEEKSKILL, NY -- Voters in Peekskill will have numerous choices to make when heading to the polls on Tuesday. This year, voters will choose a Mayor, three councilmen, and a county legislator for District 1.

In the mayoral race, incumbent Democrat Mary Foster is being challenged by Republican Tony Washington. Foster is finishing her second two-year term as mayor while Washington is seeking his first elected office after running for common council two years ago.

Three Democrats and three Republicans are running for the three contested seats on the common council. One of the seats is currently held by Deputy Mayor Don Bennett who is seeking re-election, and the other two are seats being vacated by Democrats Patricia Riley and Joe Schuder.

Democratic candidates Darren Rigger and Kathy Talbot are seeking to hold those seats for the Democrats, while Republican candidates Joe Brady, Steve Woods and Barbara Kerasiotes look to get Republicans elected to the common council after being shut out in the past two elections.

Democrats control all seven seats on the Peekskill common council. If Republicans win the mayor and three council seats up for grabs, they will have a voting majority.

In the Westchester District 1 county legislator race, incumbent Republican John Testa is seeking a second term this fall but is being challenged by former Peekskill Democratic Chairman Mike Kane.
