Frank Alonso, a Union City resident, is charged with three counts of official misconduct and multiple theft offenses, Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello said.

Between January 2024 and January 2026, Alonso diverted funds intended for the Hudson Regional Health Commission, the Office of Weights and Measures, and the New Jersey Weights and Measures Association into accounts he used for personal gain, Mello said.

In a separate complaint, Alonso is charged with theft for using checks without the authorization of the account holder for personal gain, Mello said. The thefts exceed $250,000, Mello said.

Alonso was fired from the county when the thefts were reported, Mello said.

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy released a statement saying "corrupt public officials must be held accountable for their bad actions."

"I remain fully committed to leading an open and honest county government," Guy said. "Since moving the Office of Weights and Measures under the Law Department to provide better oversight of the agency, I am proud to say we have had no issues with the unit since the transition. And this week I announced plans to establish the first-ever Office of Inspector General in Hudson County to serve as an internal watchdog for county government. As County Executive, I will continue prioritizing an honest, transparent government that residents can trust in.”

Alonso previously ran in the Democratic primary for State Assemblyman District 33, calling himself "a government ethics watchdog... who protects residents from scams and price gouging."

He also founded the Union City Concerned Citizens Group.
