The recall affects 412,774 Ford Explorers from the 2017 through 2019 model years, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report submitted on Friday, Feb. 20. The issue involves the rear suspension toe links, which may break under certain loading conditions.
The affected vehicles were built between Tuesday, May 16, 2017, and Sunday, March 3, 2019.
"Fracture of a rear toe link diminishes steering control, increasing the risk of a crash," the NHTSA wrote in its report. "The root cause has not been fully determined to date."
Drivers may notice warning signs before a failure occurs, including a "clunk noise, unusual handling, and/or a misaligned rear wheel."
The investigation began after the NHTSA contacted Ford in mid-January about five owner complaints involving 2018 Explorers that described a loss of directional control. Ford later identified 26 reports worldwide of rear toe link fractures in vehicles produced after an earlier recall was issued.
Ford said it's aware of two crashes globally that may be related to the issue involving vehicles hitting guardrails or barriers following a toe link fracture. The company said it hasn't received any reports of injuries tied to the defect.
Dealers will replace the toe links with a revised, stronger design for free. Owner letters are expected to be mailed by Friday, March 13.
The recall adds to other safety issues involving Ford Explorers in 2025. Some of the 2017 Explorers were recalled in May for door trims that can fall off while driving, while Ford issued a recall for all three model years in October over fire risks from the engine block heater.
