For Senior, Now Is About the Future

A new year is underway at New Canaan High School, but some students are already eager to begin something else. Namely, college. "I've gotten so used to seeing everyone here," said Austin Ready. "I'm looking forward to college."

The seniors have walked the halls of the high school for three years. Now they are the school leaders while also preparing for the next step. Ready is hoping to enroll in a Southern school next year, possibly Elon University in North Carolina. She says being a senior is a bit surreal, being at the top of the totem pole after having older kids around for so long. "It's weird walking around school and seeing that no one else is above you," she said.

The 17-year-old nevertheless expects to enjoy her last year. Being a senior "is empowering, like you rule the school," she said. Fellow senior Paul Templeton, 16, plans to enjoy senior year and all its privileges. "You've got to enjoy it before it all goes away," he said. "You want to enjoy the year, but you realize the unfortunate reality of looking ahead."

While seniors are having their last hurrah, freshmen are getting used to being small fish again. "It's different. There's a lot more freedom," said Taylor Ferguson, 14, while walking with three friends during a free period. "The teachers seem very nice." Ben Duplock, 13, says so far, so good to high school life, also admiring the size of his new academic home. "It's really great," he said.
