John DeCicco owns the iconic DeCicco Food Market on Fifth Avenue in Pelham. He is the former president of Pelham's Chamber of Commerce and lives in West Nyack.

Question: What is your favorite aspect of Pelham?

Answer: The people. They're very nice, very caring and very helpful. I've been here since 1984.

Q: What is your fondest memory or proudest moment in Pelham?

A: When I was honored by the Pelham Civic Association about five or six years ago as the Man of the Year. Four hundred people showed up. The response and the organization that came to support me, I was touched by it.

Q: How do you develop your relationships with your customers?

A: By being in the front. I love to bag groceries. I talk to the customers. I ask them questions and make them feel comfortable. If they need something we make sure we get it for them.

Q: What are you most proud of about your store?

A: That we create so many jobs, especially for kids. For many of them this is their first job. We like to think we teach them life skills. A lot of them come back and are doctors or lawyers or heads of corporations.

Q: Do you think you would ever leave Pelham?

A: I will always stay here. This store will always be here. It's like a monument.
