Although Stamford public schools are open Tuesday, First Student bus company is going the extra mile to make sure students get to and from school safely. It has taken steps to avoid the problems encountered Monday that resulted in some routes in some districts, including Stamford, not being covered.
The problems were because of the frigid weather, First Student Region Operation Manager Vincent Cappiello said. In a letter to the district's transportation manager, Cappiello said several buses would not start Monday because of temperature-related dead batteries, gelled fuel lines and filters, and/or frozen brake lines. Some buses were repaired, but others were not, resulting in diminished services.
The problems occurred despite measures taken over the weekend to anticipate and address weather-related problems, said Cappiello.
Tuesday, he said, "we will take additional steps to ensure we have minimal or no issues." Those steps included bringing on crews to start the fleet at three-hour intervals at 9 p.m. Monday, midnight and 3 a.m. Tuesday. Technicians monitored brake systems, batteries have been restocked, and the company's usual practice of treating tanks with fuel additives to prevent gelling was maintained, said Cappiello.
