DARIEN, Conn. Dariens Fourth of July fireworks are once again becoming a yearly tradition. After nearly a decade without them, the fireworks returned last year to great success and will be held again at Darien High School this Sunday.
More than 3,000 people attended the event last year, which benefited the Darien Firefighters' Foundation. About $3,000 was given to the organization, which raises funds to purchase equipment and pay for training for the towns three volunteer fire departments.
Two T-shirts commemorating the event were designed by Royle student Abby St. Jean and Middlesex student Emma Seely. The shirts are available online, with proceeds going to the Firefighters Foundation.
This year will feature several popular food vendors from town, including Chunky Pams Sweet Shoppe, Uncles Deli, Estias American and Gofer Ice Cream and Burgers, Shakes & Fries.
The event is free. Gates will open at 6 p.m., and the festivities will begin at 6:45 p.m. when the Darien Fireworks Band starts playing in the high school courtyard. The Color Guard will formally lower the flag at 8 p.m. The fireworks are expected to begin at 8:45 p.m.
Darien police warn that parking will be limited because of the popularity of the event. All traffic will enter the high school through Noroton Avenue, and no vehicles will be allowed in before 6 p.m.
Cars will be allowed to park in the high school spots, as well on both sides of Nutmeg Lane, both sides of High School Lane, the south side of Holly Lane and the west side of Libby Lane. All cars must be parked facing away from the high school to speed traffic flow at the end of the show.
About 34 police officers will be manning the event, with barricades and No Parking signs to regulate parking. A limited amount of handicap parking will be available.
Overflow parking will be available at the Darien Community Association, 274 Middlesex Road, and the Darien United Methodist Church, 345 Middlesex Road.
