Firefighters Douse Office Fire

A fire broke out on the second floor of Blackstone Textiles at 222 Post Road W. just before 11 p.m. Saturday.

Westport firefighters responded to the building's automatic alarm at 10:53 p.m. and saw smoke on the first and second floors when they arrived, Assistant Chief Robert Kepchar said in a statement.

After forcibly entering the building through the main door, firefighters located a blaze at a computer workstation on the second floor, where they extinguished a chair, computer and papers.

The fire was kept under control by the building's sprinkler system, which firefighters shut down and drained once the blaze was extinguished to prevent further water damage.

Firefighters ventilated the building until all the smoke had cleared. The extent of smoke, water and odor damage to the merchandise was not known. Firefighters entered first-floor businesses to cover and move merchandise to protect it from the sprinklers.

The cause of the fire was being investigated by Fire Inspector Nathaniel Gibbons. The owners of the business and the building were contacted. Firefighters stayed at the building until the owners arrived at 12:26 a.m.
