The firefighter was transported to the hospital with a back injury, Paterson Fire Chief Michael Postorino said. No further details were available on his condition.

The cause of the fire remained unknown, Postorino said.

The fire started around 11 p.m. Monday in the vacant armory building on Market Street. Firefighters continued to hose down the building 12 hours later.

"It's going to burn for awhile," Postorino told Daily Voice.

The fire closed several schools in Paterson on Tuesday, including East Side High School several blocks away on Park Avenue.

Market Street remained closed at the Park Avenue intersection Tuesday afternoon.

Fire departments from throughout Passaic County responded to the blaze, Postorino said.
