A bathroom fire at a Dutchess County high school prompted an evacuation and early dismissal for students, officials said.

The incident began at 10:22 a.m. at Red Hook High School, triggering a fire alarm and evacuation, school district officials said.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and had the fire under control by 10:45 a.m. before ventilating smoke and evaluating the building.

Students were sent to Linden Avenue Middle School and dismissed for the day at 11:15 a.m.

According to school officials, the fire began in a bathroom in the first floor's main hallway. The cause is still under investigation and damage is still being assessed, officials added.

The school will send communications out to families to let them know when they can enter the building over the weekend to pick up belongings.

The Red Hook, Tivoli, Germantown, and Rhinebeck fire departments all responded to the scene, as well as Red Hook Police.

The school day is continuing as normal for Linden Avenue Middle School and Mill Road Elementary School.
