The fire began at around 12:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, at Pine Island Elementary School, according to the Pine Island Fire Department.
Firefighters were dispatched after an automatic fire alarm activated at the school.
Soon after arriving, crews went into the building and found heavy smoke. After getting inside, firefighters found the blaze and quickly put it out.
Firefighters said the blaze was contained to a small area of the building, preventing more extensive damage.
Several neighboring departments assisted at the scene, including the Warwick Fire Department, Florida Fire Department, Wawayanda Fire Company–Slate Hill Fire Department, which responded as the FAST team, and the Pine Island Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Firefighters cleared the scene and returned to service at around 2:23 a.m.
