The fire began just before 1:40 p.m. as the bus was traveling south across the span. The vehicle, which was carrying four passengers, became fully engulfed, but they and the driver were safely evacuated and transferred to another bus, New York State Police said in an update at around 5 p.m.
No injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved.
Video shared by Monsey Scoop shows the bus engulfed in flames on the bridge.
The Pocantico Hills, Tarrytown, Central Nyack, and South Nyack fire departments responded to extinguish the flames. State Police temporarily shut down two southbound lanes to allow emergency crews to work and to remove the burned-out bus. This meant traffic initially moved through only the left lanes, resulting in heavy backups.
The bus has since been removed and all lanes have reopened, though residual delays continue, according to State Police.
The new Tappan Zee Bridge's official name is the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. The old bridge's official name was the Gov. Malcolm Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge.
