NORWALK, Conn. An afternoon fire destroyed a Norwalk business, displaced an apartment resident and slightly injured a Norwalk firefighter, according to Deputy Chief Edward Prescott. The store was 60 percent on fire and Main Street was full of smoke when firefighters arrived after the 12:35 p.m. call, and fire was coming out the back of the Crown Trophy store between B.J. Ryan's and Genuario's Carpet Store.
Every Norwalk firefighter responded to the fire, Prescott said. It took about an hour to extinguish as fire had gotten into the walls and above the antique tin ceilings in the trophy store, located in a 70-year-old building. A dance studio above Genuario's store had only a light smoke odor as a result of the fire; the businesses were able to remain open.
Firefighters were back at 4:30 p.m., knocking out hot spots.
The two apartments above the trophy store sustained smoke damage. One apartment is vacant, and the occupant of the other one was not home. Two pet birds died in the fire and the apartment dweller was relocated by the Red Cross.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the departments Fire Marshal's Division.
