A fire burning in a dumpster behind a commercial building caught the attention of two of the building's occupants just before 6 p.m. Thursday, leading to quick action by the Norwalk Fire Department.
Flames from the outside fire against the back wall had penetrated into the roof when fire crews arrived at the rear of 4 Taft St. Firefighters quickly made their way to the roof and pulled up a 15-foot-by-20-foot section of charred decking to extinguish the fire before it could spread.
The commercial building houses several businesses related to the furniture and building industry with showrooms and workshops occupying most of the 100,000-square-foot structure.
The fire caused no damage to the workshop's interior, Deputy Chief Edward Prescott said. The fire appears to have started in the area of a plastic storage shed and garbage cans along the dumpster, against the rear of Knock on Wood Antiques. The exact cause of the fire was under investigation by Deputy Fire Marshal Chris Hansen, Prescott said.
"Fortunately for the building's tenants, the fire was noticed by two of the buildings occupants, Sebastian Kitchen Cabinets and East Coast Irrigation," Prescott said. "They called 911 right away and probably helped save the building."
Firefighters and Hansen remained on the scene until just after 7 p.m., investigating and checking for hot spots. Three engines, two trucks a rescue and command car responded to the scene.
