Find A Butterfly In Ridgefield

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – You can follow a butterfly around one of Ridgefield’s meadows with a local expert who, with the Discovery Center of Ridgefield, will discuss conservation of the beautiful insect on Aug. 18.

Victor DeMasi, a research assistant at the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale, will take butterfly enthusiasts on a talk through the meadows near Simpaug Turnpike. DeMasi and his wife have traveled around the world studying butterflies for the last 40 years.

DeMasi will meet with butterfly enthusiasts at the Norwalk River study site and show off a collection of the local fauna with a short discussion on butterfly ecology and conservation.

The event will continue with a field walk in one of the state’s meadows to observe butterflies on the wing and present a few specimens for close examination, which will be released unharmed.

Children are invited, but the center and DeMasi ask that only children who are interested in natural history come along with their parents.

The center suggests wearing long pants and sturdy shoes as well as taking proper precautions against tick bites and sun exposure.

Participants can park in the Norwalk River Study site's small parking lot across from Victor's driveway at 10 Simpaug Turnpike at 10 a.m., rain or shine.
