Middlesex Middle School's seventh-graders participated in Latin America Day, a daylong celebration of the region's history and culture. This celebration was the culmination of three months of study and research of different aspects of Latin America as part of their social studies curriculum.
The students began the day portraying a Latin American character they had researched in their social studies classes. They each donned a colorful costume and gave a brief description of why their character was important to Latin American studies. Then they interviewed each other in order to learn more details about their peers' characters.
The students then bravely learned popular Latin dances from Alisa Bowens, owner and instructor of Alisa's House of Salsa in New Haven. Although many were hesitant and shy initially, each student gained confidence and rhythm under Alisa's energetic instruction as they learned to Salsa and Meringue. By the end of the lesson, everyone was having fun with their newly learned Latin dance moves.
After working up an appetite dancing, the students were treated to an authentic Latin American meal catered by Mi Casita of Norwalk and served in the Rotunda.
