State Rep. Kim Fawcett managed to fend off challenger Dee Dee Brandt to maintain her seat in the state legislature. She will serve her fourth term for the 133rd District, which covers parts of Fairfield and Westport. With all precincts reporting, the Democratic incumbent took 54 percent of the vote to beat the Republican challenger, who received 46 percent.
"I'm thrilled," Fawcett said after her victory. "It's a little bittersweet, because a lot of my colleagues lost tonight. ... But [I'm] so excited for the opportunity."
Fawcett will be the only Democrat in Fairfield's contingent in the state legislature after incumbent Tom Drew lost by a slim margin in the 132nd. Republican Tony Hwang held onto his seat from the 134th, as did John McKinney in the 28th Senate District.
On the campaign trail, Fawcett joined the other candidates in promising to work toward trimming the budget. Connecticut faces trillions in deficit spending, and Fawcett said she supported results-based budgeting, which would increase or decrease funding to departments based on performance.
"This sounds so common sense, especially to people in business," Fawcett said.
