Family Helps Protect Fairfield's K-9 Unit

FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? The Truken family wanted a unique way to honor the memory of the family dog. So they decided to help potentially prolong the life of another dog, more than 100 miles away from their home -- Fairfield’s police dog, Ruger.

The Trukens recently paid to have Ruger outfitted with a bulletproof and stab-proof vest to wear on patrol. The North Attleboro, Mass. family plans to continue to donate the $1,000 piece of equipment to honor their Labrador, Brittany, who died two years ago.

“This is going to come in handy,” said Fairfield Police K-9 handler Officer Kevin Wells. “There have been a lot of situations already where we would have used this vest.”

Robert Truken, a repair contractor for local utilities, met Wells while doing work in Fairfield for United Illuminating. At the time, Wells was anxiously waiting for Ruger’s arrival with the Fairfield Police. So when Truken and his family decided to start donating vests, they picked Ruger as the first recipient.

Robert, his wife, Jennifer, and her sons, William and Anthony Sarro visited Wells and Ruger with their gift earlier this week. The vest is embroidered with a special message, “From our dogs to yours.”
