"I have been briefed on reports of debris falling from the ceiling over a westbound lane from the Cross-Bronx Expressway leading to the lower level of the George Washington Bridge, and all westbound lanes to the lower level have been closed until [Port Authority] ensures that all roadways are safe. The Port Authority is investigating the incident and will undertake any necessary repairs immediately," Gov. Mikie Sherrill said.

Emergency maintenance crews responded to the area shortly before noon, according to traffic alerts.

As of 11:38 a.m., all westbound lanes on the lower level of the George Washington Bridge were closed between Exit 1B at Harlem River Drive/Amsterdam Avenue and the Lower Trans Manhattan Expressway due to falling debris and emergency maintenance crews in the area.

The closures caused heavy traffic delays approaching the bridge during the afternoon commute.
