FAIRIFELD, Conn.? Fairfields SAT scores showed little change from 2010 to 2011, according to figures released last week. Neither of the towns two public high schools posted median students scores in any subject with a difference of more than 10 points from the previous years seniors.
The College Boards SAT and PSAT exams test students each year in Reading Comprehension, Mathematics and Writing. The SATs, taken by juniors and seniors, have scores ranging from 200 to 800 in each subject. The PSATs, taken by sophomores and juniors each fall, grade students on a scale from 20 to 80.
Overall, Fairfield Ludlowes median scores dropped in Reading (from 555 to 548) but showed modest gains in Math (560 to 565) and Writing (563 to 568). At Fairfield Warde, median scores dipped slightly in all three subjects: down eight points to 536 in Reading, a five-point drop in Math to 551, and a three-point decrease in Writing to 558.
In the PSATs, Fairfields sophomores and juniorss scores showed similar changes. No group of students increased more than two points on the 20-to-80 point scale. The biggest increase was Fairfield Wardes math scores. Sophomores brought their median up from 50.3 in 2010 to 51.1 in 2011, and the junior class saw the same 1.8-point jump to 54.2.
On the AP exams, Ludlowes kids showed some declines, while Warde showed improvement compared to 2010. The annual College Board exams test students in a specific subject, awarding scores on a scale of 1 to 5. Ludlowe had 504 tests with a score of 3, 4 or 5, accounting for 88.7 percent of their total, down from 90.7 percent in 2010. Warde had 442 tests score above 3, increasing their percentage from 85.1 to 88.5.
